Monday Mornings: The Loss Of The USS Indianapolis

Monday, March 189:30—10:30 AMSohier RoomMain Library32 Essex Street, Beverly, MA, 01915

On July 30, 1945 the heavy cruiser Indianapolis, carrying a crew of over 1,100, was sunk by a Japanese submarine. Only 317 survived after spending almost five days in the water. Dehydration, exposure, dementia, and sharks claimed the rest. This tragedy represented a colossal failure of the Navy to recognize that the Indianapolis was missing, overdue, or simply unaccounted for. In the search for answers, excuses revealed finger pointing, denials, and outright lies. Those days in the water witnessed the best and worst examples of survival behavior. Their stories warrant telling.

Free and open to adults. Light refreshments available at 9 AM. Info: Ona at ridenour@noblenet.org or 978-921-6062.
