Beverly Bird Walks: Independence Park with Salem Sound Coastwatch

Sunday, January 2611:00 AM—12:30 PMOff-site

Join Greg Power, library volunteer and birding enthusiast, and Anna Sheridan, Project Specialist with Salem Sound Coastwatch, to get to know Beverly's open spaces through birding! This month we will be at Independence Park and will meet at 11 AM at the park. This month we will:

  • Have a drop-in style program instead of a walk (but feel free to walk Lothrop St after dropping in!)
  • Look for wintering sea ducks and shore birds as the tide goes out
  • Learn about the Salem Sound habitat and the Salem Sound Coastwatch organization

These are excellent events for new and seasoned birders alike. Open to all abilities, binoculars and registration not required! Independence Park has grass and sloped asphalt walking paths and ability to navigate uneven terrain is needed. There is ample street parking on Lothrop St which runs parallel to Independence Park. Questions? Contact Kerri MacLaury at kmaclaury@noblenet.org or 978-921-6062, ext. 2120. This program is rain or shine, though heavy rain, or hazardous ice or snow fall may result in cancellation. Be sure to check the our Event Calendar for cancellation prior to attending.

Greg Power started birding over 40 years ago. He started with the hobby while regularly going to sea for his work and casually maintained his interest over the years as he was able. In 2021, he enrolled in Massachusetts Audubon’s Birders Certificate Program (BCP). Since retiring in 2022, he has been able to dedicate significantly more time to birding. As a part of BCP, Greg identified a number of worthwhile birding spots in and around Beverly. Drawing on his experiences with other Beverly birders, he worked with Cornell University’s Laboratory of Ornithology eBird staff and others to create new birding hotspots in the city. Greg continues to seek out additional birding hotspots in Beverly by frequently visiting parks, playgrounds, and other open spaces. When he’s not birding, Greg can be found volunteering with Massachusetts Audubon, The Trustees of Reservations and other local environmentally focused organizations.
