A Witty Christmas: John Donne in Sacred Poetry and the Pulpit

Tuesday, December 207:00—8:00 PMConrad RoomFarms branch24 Vine Street, Beverly, MA, 01915

Join us for a discussion and celebration of John Donne, who is considered the greatest of the Metaphysical Poets. Donne disdained traditional forms and excelled in the paradox-celebrating “wit” that was the vogue of the day. He was called “Copernicus in Poetry”; at his funeral it was said that “an awful fire” had burned in his “clear brain”. He was brilliant, but he was also circumspect. Donne knew grief aplenty, and this personal awareness of our fragility flows in his works.

The paradoxes of Christmas were fuel to the fire of Donne’s muse, both in sacred poetry and in preaching during his years as Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. We will hear a bit of his story and then readings from his Christmas-themed poetry and sermon excerpts.
